Why cleaning IBCs matters so much

Background

Why cleaning IBCs matters so much

IBCs (intermediate bulk containers) are reusable containers, usually holding around 1,000 litres. They carry oils, emulsions, paints, cleaning agents and chemicals and are generally used several times. The precondition is thorough cleaning: residues can contaminate the next filling or react with it.

Fixed inspection intervals apply to the transport of dangerous goods. Under ADR, IBCs must be tested for leaks and external condition at least every two and a half years and undergo a full inspection, including the interior, at least every five years. For that, the container has to be clean.

FAQ

Questions about IBC container cleaning

The essentials of cleaning IBC containers and tanks.

Which IBC containers do you clean?
Standard IBCs with a plastic inner container and steel cage, steel and stainless steel IBCs, as well as tanks and other vessels. What matters is what they last contained: we need details of the product in advance, ideally the safety data sheet.
How much does it cost to have an IBC container cleaned?
The price depends on the number, type, residual quantity and the last product held, as these determine the effort and the disposal. Based on your details, you receive an individual quote.
May uncleaned IBCs be transported?
Yes, but under ADR, empty uncleaned IBCs that held dangerous goods are subject to the same rules as full ones, including marking and transport documents. A cleaned container is no longer subject to these obligations.
How often can IBCs be reused?
Steel and stainless steel IBCs can be used for a long time if they are inspected regularly. Under ADR, plastic IBCs may be used for dangerous goods for a maximum of five years from manufacture. Within that period they can be refilled several times after thorough cleaning.
What happens to the residues?
We collect residual quantities, wash water and residues and dispose of them as a certified specialist company under the Water Resources Act. The entire route remains documented and traceable.
